I went to cross-post "Walla Walla" and discovered that most of the comms I was going to post to are moderated now.  It doesn't make much difference to me, but this is surprising, given that the last time I did any major cross-posting, the only moderated comm was [livejournal.com profile] sherlockbbc which is no longer moderated.

Did something terrible happen in the past few months?

I think it might simply have to do with the huge uptick in spammers. I don't know about you, but I've been getting a ton of spammy comments, and increasingly from accounts that, at first glance, seem like they might be legit. (As opposed to anonymous, as they mostly were previously.)

Yeah, I've gotten a LOT of spam. But can spammers post spammy posts?

Huh. I'm not sure that I've seen one... but I also don't see why it'd be impossible, particularly for some of the more subtle accounts. I don't know much of the mechanics of spamming. XP I have heard that there are sometimes real people, as opposed to just spam-bots, behind certain spammy posts (particularly seen in some political contexts), based in places like China, being paid tiny amounts of money for every comment they put up in support of a certain thing. So in cases like that, it'd certainly be possible. Whether it's actually been happening much, though... *shrugs*

We had to go to semi-moderated at [livejournal.com profile] watsons_woes for two reasons; one, we were getting a lot of entries that aren't applicable for our comm - and two, we've always had a firm G-rated header rule and that kept being disregarded by comm members who were getting careless with their NC-17 rated entries.

Originally we were a no adult content comm, and the only reason I agreed to continue to moderate when we began to allow adult content was if the headers continued to be rated G and if we went to semi-moderated. Now I think anyone who posts NC-17-tagged fic has to be approved, and anyone who hasn't posted to the comm for I think three months for some reason gets sent to the moderation queue as well. *is not sure why this is but hasn't had time to figure it out*

Anyhow, for what it's worth, that's probably the issue at WW, the length of time between posts? *is unsure*

Well, yeah -- I've not written ANYTHING in a while, much less something that could go to WWS so that would explain it. I'm sorry to hear about the header issue there. I've just moved all the slash tags off my f-list so I didn't realize it.

I'm wondering if that explains ALL the moderated posts? I didn't realize you could set it so that posts with more than a three month break needed to be approved...
