Thoughtfuller Thoughts
Sep. 28th, 2012 04:46 pmI re-watched Elementary, because I realized I hadn't given it my full attention due to snarking at it with my sister and with
capt_facepalm. So here it is in a nutshell:
Pros:
-Perfectly serviceable script. Not brilliant script. I'd say one step above White Collar but about five below Leverage.
-Pretty cinematography.
-Generally okay acting except for....
Con:
-Way too much emotionalness. It's only the pilot. Save the soap for at least halfway through the first season!
-Lucy Liu. I've never seen her in anything before, so she might have better roles, but this was terrible. Completely wooden. Maybe she's going for subtle and overdoing it? But I'd like to see a muscle in her face twitch on occasion. Also she must be over forty, but her voice still has the overtones of whiny teenager. I found it a bit grating. And they're definitely making this all about Holmes and Watson, so they both need to be good. I felt like poor Jonny Lee Miller was mostly acting at a wall.
Anyway, I'm looking forward to next week. But unless Lucy Liu becomes a better actor, I'll be watching it more for the mustwatcheverysherlockholmesadaptation compulsion I suffer from than for pleasure.
The Mentalist has been and always shall be my American Sherlock Holmes adaptation of choice. :-D
