Potential

John tried to ignore the constant clacking to his right, and told himself that walking really was effective therapy for phantom pain.

He ran his calculations one last time. He would never be able to afford lodging in London for more than two months. But moving somewhere quieter…

He could advertise, of course. But the prospect of a series of mind-numbing interviews with potential flatmates – that was almost worse than leaving London.

And then there was his mother’s voice in his ear, reminding him that adverts might attract criminals and psychopaths – Far too dangerous, John!

An advert it was, then.

“John! John Watson!”

Oooh, very nice. I love the idea that John is ready to find some excitement somehow, even if it means ignoring anything resembling common sense.

Thank you!

I'm writing an essay on A Scandal in Belgravia at the moment (because I'm that kind of nerd) and I was considering a point that relied on John being a representative common man. I'm not entirely sure what I'm going to do with the idea yet, but as I tried to decide if I could actually make the argument that he was a common man, his complete LACK of common sense in some situations kept jumping out at me... followed by his mostly un-common-ness... :-D

maybe "it's always the quiet ones" is at play here?

John's behavior annoyed me at two main points in SIB -- when he left Irene alone with Sherlock, and when he lied to Sherlock at the end (and Sherlock let him!)

Perhaps?

I think that he _really_ messed up in both those instances (and in several others, though those are the two that I've spent the most time on.) My paper really hinges on the fact that those instances were meant to annoy you (and me... and the rest of the audience.) :-)

(This reminds me that I never replied to your comments in the mini discussion we were having a few weeks ago. The weekend was over and I didn't have time... will try to get to it this evening! :-) )

That was really good! :-) I like when we get to see the side of John that is attracted to danger and excitement far more than would be sensible. I think the BBC series did a really splendid job of portraying that this side of John is (one of) the reason(s) he gets along with Sherlock so well. And your drabble very neatly shows that he hasn't lost this "potential" even when he is alone and somewhat broken...
Nice job! :-)

Thank you!

I love the way the shows portrays them both as VERY messed up. :-) I'm glad you liked my take on it here.
