Actually, one of my colleagues introduced me to it and has been subjecting me to a couple of episodes each week. In revenge, I have been getting her to read "A Study in Scarlet" in preparation for watching "A Study in Pink".
I recognized it in the "I've heard this recently" sort of way, and then looked it up. I think I saw a gif of it...
Besides, a lot of my friends insist that I should watch it. I will someday. :-)
And that 's good you're making your friend read it first. I think you can only FULLY appreciate Study in Pink (and really all of Sherlock) if you know your Sherlock Holmes canon well.
This same friend posted that quote on her Facetube page early in the summer. Another colleague, also not recognising the quote, swore immediate and sudden revenge upon whomever perpetrated the betrayal. (And then had to be assured that no actual betrayal had taken place. She was already building a weapon, you see... a book!flail made of books and a belt... )
